In 2017 Emaar Entertainment asked for a digital canvas that could sit above the 11-million-litre aquarium in Dubai Mall without looking like a billboard bolted to a tank. The result was a 50-metre-wide, two-storey curved OLED videowall — 700 square metres, 820 LG OLED Open Frame panels, 1.7 billion pixels — recognised with three Guinness World Records: highest-resolution screen, largest high-definition videowall, and largest OLED videowall.
DigiComm (Digital Communication LLC) supplied the technical specification, solution and installation. We coordinated Emaar Entertainment with LG on the panels and Dataton on playback. A network of 52 WATCHPAX 4 media engines ran Dataton WATCHOUT, delivering content at the wall’s native resolution. Space behind the curve was almost nonexistent, so servers had to sit with the screens rather than in a distant rack room.
The operational constraint was the mall: work was limited to a five-hour window, 1:00am to 6:00am. Content had to be authored above 80,000 × 20,000 pixels and distributed across the 52 players in sync. CEO Abdul Bakhrani described it as the most demanding videowall DigiComm had taken on — and the reason we still get called for flagship LED and OLED work in Dubai.
The wall was designed first to promote the aquarium, then as a canvas for sponsors. It is the proof we put in front of mall, hotel and attraction clients who need a display that can survive a public environment, a landlord, and a content team.
